Language Instructor – Evening Classes

$19.00 - $21.50 an hour
For over twenty years, the YMCA of Greater Saint John Newcomer
Connections Centre has welcomed newcomers to the Greater Saint
John community. As a leading community organization, Y Newcomer
Connections assists immigrants and refugees with their settlement
needs and helps to facilitate their integration and participation in the
community.

position overview

Reporting to the Language Supervisor, the Language Instructor pro-
vides assistance, practical guidance, and community referrals to new-
comer clients at Newcomer Connections. The Language Instructor
provides English language training to adult learners who are assessed
using Canadian Language Benchmarks. This part time contract posi-
tion, subject to annual renewal.

duties

  • Instruct newcomer adult learners in the themes and topics from
the Canadian Language Benchmarks curriculum;

  • Create objectives and outcomes in daily lesson plans and modules;
  • Design and assess task-based learning activities;
  • Enhance the curriculum with level-appropriate experiential activi-
ties;
  • Use Portfolio Based Language Assessment (PBLA) to monitor learn-
ers’ progress;
  • Develop and deliver computer-based learning activities in line with
the Canadian Language Benchmarks;
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date attendance records;
  • Track clients’ progress using a database;
  • Inform Language Coordinator of issues in a timely manner;
  • Submit monthly reports electronically to the Language Coordina-
tor at the end of every month;
  • Participate in monthly LINC Instructor meetings and planning days
and attend monthly Newcomer Connections staff meetings.
Qualifications and experience
  • A Bachelor’s Degree from a recognised university
  • A recognised TESL Education credential
  • Heightened sensitivity to the needs of newcomer adult learners
  • A minimum of 2 years work experience in a cross-cultural environ-
ment
  • Must be fluent in the English language, knowledge of other lan-
guages is an asset

Salary: $19.00/hr—$21.50/hr

Work Schedule : Monday-Friday

Evenings (20 hours a week)
