"And the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became living being." (Gen. 2:7).
Adam was fully formed yet without life. He was immobile and unproductive because he was missing the main ingredient of life - the breath of God. God breathed into Adam the breath of life and he became a living being. He became productive: he worked the garden, named the animals, and was given authority and responsibility because he had the life of God in him.
A man called Nicodemus, a powerful leader in his city, came to Jesus at night in search of truth. He had heard the great teachings of Jesus and saw the mighty miracles that He performed. He had never seen a man so great, not even the Rabbis or military rulers were as powerful as this man Jesus. Nicodemus came to Jesus and asked: "Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him. In reply Jesus declared, "I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again." (John 3:2,3).
The term "born again" baffled the great leader and Jesus explained: "Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit." (John 3:6). Like Adam at creation, we too need the breath of life, the Spirit of God to come and infuse us for eternal life. This process of 'being saved' or being 'born again' simply describes our invitation to Jesus to come and save us and release His Holy Spirit of eternal life in us. We live now and forever with Jesus Christ.
